Supernatural: Magic Behind the Scenes

Supernatural became very popular within the Witchcraft communities. Not only to those who are only dipping their toes into the Spiritual or Supernatural world, but also the more seasoned practitioners that have been involved within the occult for decades. I knew that the tv show was quite popular and once I started watching it, I could see why. Two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester drive to various destinations throughout the United States in their deceased Father’s Chevrolet Impala vanquishing spirits, demons, and monsters.

During the first season, the show primarily featured the two brothers going into haunted homes, abandoned buildings, cemeteries, and other naturally eerie vestibules. They followed in their father, John Winchester’s legacy to vanquish restless spirits, who continued to plague the living.

At the crux of the first Season Finale, suddenly Supernatural had taken a darker turn into the realm of Demons, Angels and ultimately Solomonic rituals. During the final episode of Season 1, Sam and Dean meet Bobby Singer, a longtime friend of their Father’s. Bobby finds it his duty to teach the Winchester brothers how to trap and exorcise demons. Not only does Bobby has a collection of rare, leather-bound occult texts, he has in his possession, none other than The Key of Solomon.  Most notably, The Key of Solomon is an ancient grimoire attributed to King Solomon.

Who Was King Solomon?

King Solomon was born approximately 990 BCE and reigned over Jerusalem from 970 – 931 BCE. According to the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, he was the monarch of Ancient Israel and the successor to King David. He was known for being wise, wealthy, and powerful. King Solomon was named as one of the 48 Jewish prophets and was also named for being an Islamic prophet referred to as Sulaiman ibn Davud, which translates to “Solomon, son of David” in the Quran.

Outside the Abrahamic religions, he was known as a Magician and Exorcist that utilized numerous amulets and medallion seals dating from the Hellenistic period, which referred to the time period between the death of Alexander the Great and the emergence of the Roman Empire, roughly 323-31 BCE.

According to one Biblical legend, God appeared to King Solomon in a dream and asked what it was that he desired most. Solomon asked for wisdom so that he may lead his people to greatness. Pleased by Solomon’s selfless appeal, God granted his request. It was said that when Solomon received God’s boon, he was given control over the Upper World, inhabited by Angels and power over the inhabitants of the Globe, including spirits, demons, and animals.

The Seal of Solomon

The Seal of Solomon, or sometimes referred to as The Ring of Solomon, was a signet ring around the Star of David or another Pentagram-like design.  The Seal of Solomon was the predecessor to the Star of David. Within Religious lore, the Seal of Solomon was described as giving Solomon the power to command and control supernatural beings, as well as the ability to talk to animals. During the Medieval and Renaissance time periods, the Seal of Solomon became increasingly popular within the systems of magic, occultism, and alchemy.

An important thing to note was that the Ring of Solomon may have not been an actual ring that you would wear, but a symbolic talisman that King Solomon carried on him at all times. It could have been a ring. However, it probably wasn’t. According to one legend, the Seal of Solomon was taken by Asmodeus from Solomon and thrown into the ocean, where it was eaten by a fish. Asmodeus then swallowed and spat out Solomon, catapulting the King 400 miles away. Asmodeus took over the throne and Solomon ended up wandering the desert. Eventually, Solomon came to a coastal town, where he ended up eating the very fish that swallowed the Seal. With the Seal back in Solomon’s possession once again, he was able to reign over his Kingdom.

The Keys of Solomon

The Keys of Solomon, which are the The Greater Key of Solomon and The Lesser Key of Solomon were not actual keys. They happened to be volumes of grimoires that were most likely written in the 14th and 15th century Italian Renaissance, which had been accredited to the work of King Solomon. It is believed that the Keys of Solomon were influenced by Jewish Kabbalists and Arabic Magicians, which also incorporated Greco-Roman magic. Of the two volumes, The Lesser Key of Solomon, also known as Goetia, is the more popular guidebook on how to summon the 72 demons that King Solomon was associated with.

Tools for Exorcism

Being that Dean and Sam Winchester’s prime occupations were exorcising dark forces and ultimately trying to prevent the Apocalypse, the connection to Solomon was extremely important. For starters, the anti-possession tattoo that Bobby gives Dean and Sam Winchester in Season 3 is a modern rendition of the Seal of Solomon.

Throughout the course of Supernatural, salt, and holy water have played an important role. And there are many things that can be used to trap a negative spirit, like Alum. And it is widely known that everything will flee from Camphor. However, the most important thing that makes Dean and Sam powerful is their will. Every little thing that they learn, brings them closer to learning the truth about their father and ultimately what happened to their mother. They may never be able to bring back their mother from the dead, but they can fight for her cause and the cause of the innocent. Spoken incantations and heroic endeavors have no real power without heart.
