The year was 1961. John F. Kennedy had just become the 35th president. Alan Shepard became the first American to go into outerspace aboard the Mercury Redstone-3. The American Civil Rights Movement had been initiated by the Freedom Riders, a group of civil rights activists.
It was September. It was the time of year that New Hampshire was known for its miraculous views of red, burnt orange and golden leaves. As each day passed, the air became crisp with Winter approaching.
Barney Hill was driving, and Betty Hill sat in the passenger seat. They were on their way back home from a vacation in Montreal and Niagara Falls. The couple was almost in their hometown of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They were driving along Route 3, a road that was familiar to them. This was nothing out of the ordinary. Or was it?
Betty had noticed what appeared to be a falling star. However, the object moved towards the southwestern part of the moon and then back up again. Due to its erratic movements and increasing size and brightness, Betty urged Barney to stop the car. Barney pulled over at a rest area just south of Twin Mountain in Carroll, New Hampshire. Little did the couple know that what they saw would forever change their lives.
They both got out of the car to observe the anomaly. Betty, whose sister had previously seen a flying saucer, thought that based on her sister’s personal account, that that was what it must have been. Barney looked through the binoculars and dismissed Betty’s claim, stating “its probably just a commercial airline on its way to Vermont.” Once the object in the sky started to descend towards their direction, he quickly changed his mind and decided it was best for the couple to get back in their car and leave the area.
Barney and Betty decided to drive slowly towards Franconia Notch, a historic mountain pass through the White Mountains, to keep their eyes on the craft. The UFO zig-zagged from Cannon Mountain to Old Man of the Mountain as they drove down the road. The object continued to move erratically back and forth, as if what they were following was also following them. About one mile south of Indian Head, the craft rapidly descended towards the Hill’s vehicle, which caused Barney to stop in the middle of the highway. The craft was approximately 80 feet in front of them and filled an entire field.
Barney got out of his car again and used the binoculars to get a better look. There were around 8 to 11 humanoid beings that were peering out of the space craft’s windows. He heard a voice in his head say Stay where you are and keep looking! The craft started to move closer to the Hill’s vehicle to about 50 feet away. Barney quickly removed the binoculars from his face and in a frenzy he got back in the car, “They’re going to capture us!” he exclaimed to his wife, Betty.
Once inside the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, he started driving once again, but it was too late. The UFO had transitioned directly on top of the Hill’s vehicle. Suddenly, the Hills heard rhythmic buzzing and beeping sounds, which reverberated off the car’s metallic surface. The car started to vibrate and sent tingling sensations throughout the couple’s bodies. This somehow caused Betty and Barney’s minds to enter a subconscious-like state, where their minds were void of thoughts or feelings. It was as if the couple had gone into a trance and were completely unaware.
The second time that Betty and Barney heard the same series of sounds, they were regaining their consciousness. It was as if they were waking from a coma. When the couple tried to recall their last memories, Barney remembered taking a sharp turn in order to get away from the UFO, but the road was ultimately blocked. There, they observed a fiery orb on the road in front of them. Most of the couple’s memories were incomplete or fragmented. The only thing that really gave the couple answers were Betty’s dreams and hypnosis therapies.
Another Sighting
A few years later, on September 3, 1965, there was another UFO sighting. This time it was in Exeter, New Hampshire, just 17 miles from the Hill’s home in Portsmouth. No abductions had been reported. However, three witnesses came forward. One of which was a police officer that the incident had been reported to. You just have to ask, what is it about this region that attracts these other-worldly beings? And why did it happen again in September? One thing which may be a strong possibility is that the Earth is in constant orbit. September may be the one time of the year that the location where these beings originate is closest to Earth. Kind of like an orbital sweet spot if you will.
So, Where Did They Come From?
After the abduction, Betty Hill had gone through a series of hypnosis therapies to retrieve lost memories. At one point while aboard the craft, she had asked the little grey being where they were from. Immediately, the being was able to pull up a map onto the wall that lit up like a computer screen. Betty had drawn the group of stars that she saw. It had been concluded by Marjory Fish, an elementary school teacher and astronomer, to correlate with Zeta Reticuli, a binary star system in the southern constellation of Reticulum, approximately 39.3 light years from Earth. Fish’s findings ended up in Astronomy magazine, where the subject sparked debate within the Opinion page for about a year.
There were many controversies over the star map that had been drawn by Betty Hill. Some argued that the spacing between the stars did not match up with the Zeta Reticuli system. However, Betty had drawn these things during hypnosis and by memory. We cannot say that it would have been scientifically accurate. In 1990, the European Hipparcos mission, which measured the distance between the stars around the sun, had measured the most accurate distances between the stars than ever before. It had been determined that the distances between the stars on Betty’s map were much further away. This caused Marjory Fish to rebuke her findings as inaccurate.
One Question Still Remains…
Betty and Barney Hill’s abduction case is one of the most famous. Being that it was believed for the longest time that the beings they encountered came from the Zeta Reticuli star system, the beings are often called the Zeta Greys. There is a good indication that they were not from the Zeta Reticuli, based on modern research. So, where were they from? They could very well be from further away, in a distant galaxy not yet discovered. There is a possibility that the beings traveled through a wormhole or some other route to Earth. In this lifetime, we may never know.
