The Ins and Outs of Reversal Magic

There is an over abundance of spells to be purchased on marketplaces like Etsy and Instagram. A friend recently sent me a photo of a Return to Sender that she had paid for on one of these platforms. Upon looking at the photo, I knew that she had been robbed. It looked like a stock photo of a scene that imitates spellwork. Granted, it was a nice-looking photo. But it was not a reversal. There are a few things that new occultists must adhere to before moving forward.

What is a Reversal / Return to Sender

A true reversal or return to sender returns any sort of magic, evil eye or negativity back to the person that sent it out. However, the caveat here is that it is ideal to know what you are returning and to whom. Of course you can do a very basic Return to Sender. However, knowing who your opponent is can help your strategy. The art of magic is like playing a game of chess. If something fails, you try something different. However, if you are new to the game and going up against a master, things can turn ugly. I offer up this word of caution because if the opponent is a seasoned practitioner, you may end up in a battlefield. There are some occultists that use the craft as a sport and are looking to test out your abilities. In these circumstances, it is best to cleanse yourself and call it a day. It’s not worth your time and energy in the long run.

How to Determine a Spiritual Attack

If you are proficient in dreaming, pay attention to your dreams as they will give you clues as to what is happening and you may be able to even see your opponent. Most common dreams are as follows:

  • Being physically attacked either by a person or an animal. Please note who or what is attacking you as this may draw clues as to who your enemy is. You may already know who it is.
  • Being in murky or dark colored water. Cloudy or dark water represents blockages.
  • Being watched or stalked by a stranger. These dreams in my opinion are the creepiest. Nothing makes your heart race more than a stranger outside your window.
  • Dreaming of spiders, frogs, bugs or snakes… and a lot of them. If they are biting you or sucking your blood, that screams “parasitic entity.” Even a room filled with snakes, where you feel trapped is a tell-tale sign.

Also pay attention to how you feel when you wake up. Do you feel depressed, tired even though you had a full night’s sleep? If you normally dream, did you stop dreaming? This is another sign of a spiritual attack.

Physical symptoms can include intense depression or anxiety; losing items; feeling sick or in pain; pest infestation in the home or finding dead animals outside; having accidents whether it’s cutting your hand or a car crash; heaviness on your body, especially at the base of your neck or on your shoulders; constant fighting between yourself and the people around you.

What about Evil Eye or Malocchio?

Evil Eye is essentially envy and gossip. It is sent by those that feel a certain way because you are getting ahead in life or put slander on your name due to jealousy. This sort of thing manifests as blockages. Even though it isn’t a direct spiritual attack, it can sometimes be dangerous because it’s not something that is felt right away. That energy can linger and build, so it is recommended to take spiritual baths on a regular basis.

So What Does a Reversal or Return to Sender Look Like?

There are a few ways that a Return to Sender can be done. The most widely known kind of reversal working is one where either the candle or a glass containing water and a petition are turned upside down. This physical act of turning a tangible item around on its head is what is known as sympathetic magic, where a person or thing can be affected by the supernatural through a physical object representing such a change. Most magic is metaphorical. Sometimes in order to find spiritual solutions to problems, one must determine what in nature symbolically reflects what we are trying to accomplish.

Some common tools used in Return to Sender are:

  • Crab shell, as Crabs are known to walk sideways (or backwards). The shell is commonly ground up and added to candles with other ingredients.
  • Sea Salt. Sea Salt can do whatever you ask it to do. It is one of the most versatile ingredients in the spiritual arts.
  • Euctalyptus Leaf, eucalyptus is known to have reversal properties. Due to the sharp fragrance it carries, it can deflect negative energy.
  • Mirrors, as mirrors are reflective. They also have a strong association with water and the moon due to its reflective properties. A very simple reversal would be lighting a candle on top of a mirror that is facing upwards. Although as a note, it is not recommended to look into the mirror that you are using.
  • Water, for its reflective properties.

Sea Vibes

As you may have noticed, a lot of the items listed above are related to the ocean. Since sea water expands and shrinks back based on the tides and the moon, it is the perfect source for reversals. Sea water itself represents movement, which is the goal here. Another point that I want to mention is that the ocean itself is seen as a liminal space; a portal and connected to the supernatural world as a whole, whatever name you call it. In various cultures across the world, it is believed that when one dies, they are transported either over a body of water or within the water to reach the realm of the dead. That being said, any sort of reversal or cleansing can be done at the ocean, as it is known to transport and consume the dead.
